12 April 2024 – Bonus Beach Time

Miles driven today = 53

Total Miles to date = 3,912

I mentioned the other day that we were resigned to having bid a fond farewell to the Adriatic but I’m pleased to report that I was a little premature in that assessment.  We had originally scheduled a 2 nights stopover in San Marino but we saw everything we were really interested in seeing there yesterday and a hot day in a dusty car park followed by a 150 mile drive to Verona tomorrow didn’t really appeal or make sense, so we decided to split the journey and have one more night on the coast en-route instead.

We initially wriggled our way northwards to Santarcangelo di Romagna and then on through a succession of industrial estates to Cesena where we picked up the dualled SS3bis across a flatter and more arable landscape to Ravenna for a Lidl stop.  Having skirted round to the East of the town we found ourselves in the slightly odd position of having smelly chemical plants to our right and a lagoon full of the biggest concentration of flamingos we have seen to date on this trip to the left.

From Porto Corsini we then followed the coast for a few kilometres to Camping Reno which is costing us just €17 for the night without hook up.

From the campsite it’s just a short walk through a narrow band of pines to the beach.

It’s not the most exceptional stretch of coastline but the sand is soft and the waters calm, so I finally stopped being a massive man baby, donned my trunks and immersed myself in the waters.  It was nice once you were in, as they say.

We’ve seen a lot more of these Keralan style drop net contraptions today and this one was just across the channel at the end of the beach so we went to have a quick look.

There’s certainly plenty of wildlife here.  We walked to the end of one of the stone groins and saw lots of crabs, sea anemones, oysters, mussels and a variety of small fish in the cracks between.  There are swallows nesting in the campsite shower blocks and we even spotted a pair of snakes mid copulation, although they shuffled off into the undergrowth before we were able to get close enough for a photo.

Unfortunately there are a lot of mozzies here too and a few have managed to find their way into the van despite our best endeavours in keeping the nets over the door and windows closed.  I’ll no doubt be waking up with a head that looks like the Clangers’ planet again in the morning.
