16 October 2022 - Obidos and a spot of technical bother

A quick 45 minute drive this morning from Nazaré brought us to the thoroughly quaint walled town of Obidos. It's known to the Portuguese as the "Wedding City" as it was traditionally gifted by Portuguese royalty to their spouses when they were married. The main gateway has a dogleg configuration which contains this shrine. There were lots of references to a literary festival which is currently being held in the town. Most of the buildings along the main street are now tourist gift shops. At the end of the street is the Livraria de Satiago flanked on either side by defensive towers. The main castle keep now contains a hotel.Obidos rooftops from the castle walls. We were very impressed with a lot of the floral displays in the town.A lot of the shops were selling a local liqueur made from sour cherries.Chocolates are also very popular. You could even buy small chocolate cups to drink your cherry liqueur from. They actually have a chocolate festival here every March.Despite notices requesting people to desist a lot of buildings are grafittied by folks using the blue paint to scrawl on the white backgrounds.Inside St Peter's Parish Church.Back outside the town walls, Obidos even has its own aqueduct. We moved on. We are booked into the campsite just outside of Lisbon tomorrow for 3 nights and wanted to get ourselves within reasonable driving distance. So we headed for the seaside town of Ericeira. There were a few options here for places to stay but more importantly there was a sure fire opportunity to fill up the LPG tanks first.
So we pulled up at the Shell garage, attached the appropriate adaptor to the filler point and plugged in. Very quickly we noticed we had a leak. So I got the adjustable spanner out, tightened all the nuts and tried again. Same result. It looks as though with all the opening and closing of the gas locker the joint between the pipe and the external filler point has worked its way loose and I don't have the tools or the expertise to sort it out, so top priority tomorrow is to find a repair shop who can sort it out for us. There seem to be at least 3 this side of Lisbon so fingers crossed.
With limited gas reserves now available to us we decided to go for the one option in Ericeira which has hook up available. They call themselves Ericeira Camping & Bungalows but the motorhome section is basic and cheap. Only €9 without hook up or €13 with. Facilities are OK. The only issue we have is the bar next door currently has a band who are loudly murdering "Jolene". We're just hoping it doesn't go on much longer.
This windmill is at the entrance to the site. I have no idea if it is authentic. I suspect not.We haven't been into the town itself. Instead we headed out along the clifftops. This is looking south towards the town. There's a big surfschool run out of an establishment next to the campsite. We ignored the "unstable cliffs" warning signs. The coastline to the north of here is wild and rugged with some impressive surfing breaks. We stumbled across this old fort which will probably be at the bottom of the cliffs before too many more years have passed. Now if only this bloody excrutiating excuse for a band would shut up! They can't possibly expect to be paid for this surely!
17 October 2022 - Gas problem solved. On to Lisbon.
