17 March 2025 – Busy Doing Nothing

Miles driven today = 55

Total Miles to date = 2,091

It’s St Paddy’s Day.  Top of the morning to ya!  This was the view which greeted me this morning as I stumbled bleary eyed in my PJs to the shower block.  But we weren’t tempted to hang around and were still determined to get in some relaxation and beach time today before the weather takes a distinct turn for the worse tomorrow.

Heading due East from Sparti towards the Coast would have involved some tortuous driving on mountain roads, so instead we headed North on the E961 towards Tripoli (no not the Libyan one) before veering East and following the Tanos Valley.

The scenery was stunning but unfortunately opportunities to pull over and admire our surroundings, and also allow the irate locals to pass, were few and far between.

We wriggled our way through the narrow streets of Astros and shortly afterwards we hit the beach at its coastal satellite of Paralio Astros.

I hadn’t really researched this stretch of coastline until last night and I found a couple of potential  overnight spots on Park4Night.  But whilst looking at the satellite view of the area on Google Maps I noticed there were a number of motorhomes parked up on this stretch of beach and so we headed here first and found no reason to look any further.

There were 5 vans here already when we parked up including 2 fellow Brits.  We had a long chat with one of the couples.  They are full timers, both having Irish passports. This is their fourth visit here and they have already been here for 5 nights on this occasion, so there is obviously no problem with parking here out of season.

So this afternoon we have really done very little other than take a stroll along the beach.  I did brave the waters for my second swim of the trip and embarrassed myself by having to crawl back out again due to the steeply shelving sand just beyond the water’s edge.

But the rest of the day has basically been spent coming good on the promise to ourselves to do as little as absolutely possible, which really isn’t terribly difficult when you have this view to stare at.

We even took a night off cooking and washing up.  Our neighbour recommended Mavrogiannis, which is the first restaurant you reach walking along the seafront towards the town.  Lisa getting stuck into yet another Greek Salad.

We were shown the contents of the fish chiller and were surprised to see they had some sole.  Most fish in Greek restaurants is sold by the kilo, which often puts me off because I can’t haggle in Greek but these 2 came to just €22 the pair and were straight in the deep fat fryer and on the table in barely 10 minutes.

By the time we left the Sun had set behind us and was just casting the last of its rays on the hills on the far side of the Argolic Gulf.  27 degrees yesterday is due to drop to a maximum of just 8 by Wednesday and there is some rain in the forecast for tomorrow afternoon.  So our thoughts are that we will probably sit tight for another day and have a bit of a poke around the resort before battening down the hatches.
