We had more
rain last night and it continued well into this morning. Lots of it.
Big splashy dollops of rain thudding onto the roof. It wasn’t consistent. There were breaks which were long enough for
us to dash up to the shower block and luxuriate under what are probably the
best showers we have found anywhere on the trip to date. And we certainly haven’t been affected anywhere
near as badly as the horrific flooding videos we have been seeing from the
island Paros but it was getting on for midday before we saw anything which
approached being able to be called a proper break in the weather.
Lunchtime came and went and it was well past 4pm before we were confident enough to leave the van for any period of time for fear of getting a drenching. By that time we were both getting very cabin feverish so we went on a march down past the harbour….
…and then along the beach to Kala Nera.
You can see how much rain we have had here. I’m certain that these people don’t normally have a pond in their front garden. It was flooding across the road and onto the beach on the other side.
The lady on reception at Camping Sikia assured us there would be more tavernas open here than we found at Kato Gatzea yesterday. There are certainly more tavernas but they all appeared to be very firmly closed.
We turned around and started heading back towards the campsite when we spotted one establishment which did have a few tablecloths set and a couple of very dim lights twinkling inside, so we tried our luck.
And lo and behold they were open. The menu was decidedly limited, so I ended up having pork again but it was a beautifully cooked knuckle while Lisa had a huge skewer of chicken in mushroom sauce. We were joined by a fascinating Swiss lady called Doris, who is our neighbour on the campsite and is travelling in a lovely old Eriba pop-top Caravan with her Shih Tzu, Jackie.
We are travelling in opposite directions once we leave the Pelion so we exchanged stories and campsite recommendations whilst surrounded by a gang of at least 8 mournful looking cats and this old fella who made very short work of my knuckle bone.
The forecast is telling us that we are not necessarily completely clear of the wet weather just yet but things are definitely looking to be on the up so we will explore deeper into the peninsula tomorrow.
