Another cold, grey and misty morning. We made our way to the N25 which whisked us to the east and then to the north of Amiens. Then we stuck to the minor D roads for the remainder of today's journey through a succession of villages and across largely flat arable lands with the odd tractor chucked in for good measure. "A bit like driving through Lincolnshire" said Lisa and she was spot on in her observation.
We are finally back on the coast. We drove through Merlimont, which is where we spent our first night in France and we revisited the roundabout which was the scene of the infamous cutlery drawer incident.
We decided to head for Stella Plage, which is where we had initially intended to spend that first night in early September. On that occasion all 30 bays were full but today it's just ourselves and a German chap in a monster Iveco off-roader RV tucked in here behind the sand dunes.
The sun has tried to make an appearance this afternoon. We clambered up and over the dunes to see the broad beach and the Channel beyond.
I have to confess that I had a small lump in my throat when drove along the front and saw the Sea. Although we still have a little way to go before we get home it felt like we had completed the circle and achieved what we had set out to do. The tide was well out and the beach is huge but with a chilly wind in our faces we had to keep moving.
There were few hardy dog walkers on the sand and a long line of land yachts which seemed to be abandoned to the tide, although I'm sure they actually weren't.
Other than that Stella Plage is basically shut for the winter. A couple of guys have been down to empty the bins and the local gendarmerie gave us a cursory look to make sure all is in order but the shutters on all the apartments and holiday homes are firmly closed.
Oh hang on though. Another van has just turned up. 28 free spaces and they pull in right next to us! No, it's OK, they've moved. They obviously saw us glowering distastefully out of the window and got the message. Why do people do that though?
