21 April 2024 – Remich, Luxembourg

Miles driven today = 70

Total Miles to date = 4,630

We got a rude awakening at 7am and yet again it was the local campanologists who were to blame.  It’s all well and good letting us know what the time is with the relevant number of bongs but this went on for a good five solid minutes.  Then to make matters worse I blew out on Wordle ending a 56 game streak, so not the best way to start to the day.

It did get better though.  It’s Glastonbury resale day and although I didn’t get a sniff of a booking page the sheer persistence, teamwork and organization of our group paid off once again and with a 100% success rate nobody is going to be left behind.

So once we had done the final few bits of prep and got the van serviced it was getting on towards 11am before we pulled away from Hornbach.  We had a chat with the owners of another British van who are on the outwards journey to Greece via Romania with their 3 young homeschooled kids.  I told them how jealous I was of their journey just beginning whilst ours is coming to an end.

We backtracked to Zweibrucken where we rejoined the A8 Autobahn which took us all the way to the Luxembourg border.  For a while we closely followed the course of the Saar River as it meandered its way through the lush, undulating German countryside.  Before we knew it we were crossing the Mosel and we were in Luxembourg.  Another new country for me.  I now only have one more to clock up 50 countries visited.

Our initial plan had been to stay in a campsite a little way out of Luxembourg City and maybe have a look around the place.  But all the pitches there appear to be on grass and with the amount of precipitation we have had lately we decided that it really wasn’t worth the risk of getting stuck.  So instead we took a right turn along the banks of the Mosel, filled up with the cheapest diesel we have seen at €1:51, and made our way to Remich, where we are on hardstanding on an €18 a night aire (including hook up) amongst the vineyards.

The weather really has been absolutely dire since we left Italy 3 days ago and we are starting to get rather cabin feverish.  We’ve had more sleet and hail today and temperatures are still resolutely in single figures.  These are the types of conditions we were worried about encountering as we made our way south through France in February.  We certainly weren’t expecting them while we were on the homeward leg in late April.

We did finally get a bit of a break in the weather this afternoon so we wrapped up and had a wander into Remich to see what it’s like.  We initially stolled down the banks of the Mosel, which forms the border with Germany up to the point of its confluence with the Sure.

There’s a nice little park with a large pond which is home to some large koi who seemed to expect us to feed them as we approached.

The central area is pedestrianized.

This fountain has taken inspiration from the vineyards which cover the steep slopes of the valley.

We took a sharp left turn up a steep cobbled street.

The town’s main Church and a few impressive looking homes stand on the higher ground but in all honesty Remich isn’t the most eye opening of towns.

We could have walked over the bridge and back into Germany if we were so inclined.  I actually feel quite bad that we have zoomed through Germany and Austria in a matter of 3 days.  They seem to be equally as well set up for motorhoming as France or Spain are and the people are always incredibly friendly.  We still have so much of this continent to explore.

Thanks, no doubt, to its wine country riverside location, Remich is a bit of a tourist destination in the Summer months and is reckoned to have more than 50 different eating establishments.  We scanned a few menus while we wandered this afternoon and spotted that one particular restaurant, Um Scheff, seemed to be very popular.  So we decided to head that way for dinner this evening.  This is “Kniddelen & Wainzoosiss” or dumplings and local wine sausage in a mustard sauce to you and me.  Lisa had similar but with a bit of veg instead of the extra carbs.  It was very nice but my arteries hate me now and I am in serious danger of slipping into food coma at any moment.  Goodnight.
