22 April 2025 – 26 Degrees East

We’re in
Romania at our most Easterly stopover of the trip. 26 degrees East of the Greenwich Meridian may
seem a relatively thin slice of lemon in the overall global scheme of things but
Calais looks an awfully long way away when you look at a map of Europe.
We are at Camping La Ferma in the village of Homoraciu. According to one review I have read it is possibly the largest campsite in all of Romania. The owner told Lisa there were more than 100 vans here for the Easter weekend, and there is room for many more, but most of them have gone home now and we only have a relatively small number of neighbours parked in what we understand to be quince orchard.
We haven’t
really done a huge amount today other than driving. On leaving the lovely Koukery Campsite we
headed to the border town of Ruse. I had
already bought a Romanian toll vignette online so the only brief hold up at the
border was to pay the €2 charge for crossing the Bridge of Friendship across the
wide expanse of the Danube.
The first stretch of road which took us North towards Bucharest was boringly straight, passing through equally monotonously flat arable land where the bright yellow of the rapeseed flowers dazzled us in the sunshine. We stopped at a Lidl just a little way south of the Capital. It was our first proper shop for a week but still came in at less than £80, including booze, so Romania definitely seems to be a bit cheaper still than Bulgaria. Romanian is also a Latin language so anybody with a smattering of Spanish or Italian can get to grips with it and it was something of a relief to be able to understand a lot more of the signage and packaging, without having to revert to Google Translate, than has been the case ever since we arrived in Greece.
One of my
Mum’s live in carers comes from Bucharest and even she didn’t have anything to
recommend about the City so we gave it a wide berth. The new A0 ring road is fantastic but, so
far, incomplete so when it hame to an abrupt end we were diverted onto the old road and encountered the worst
traffic jams we have had so far on the trip.
We similarly looped around Ploiesti and then picked up the 1A, which for
mile after mile passed through almost continuous 50 kph limited urbanization. So it was with some relief that we reached
our home for the night and could switch off the engine and relax without feeling the
need to go exploring outside of the campsite.
For the second time this trip the cutlery drawer ended up in bits on the floor. It’s all back together again now but every time this happens another plastic lug falls off so I’m going to have to buy some spares and get it fixed properly when we get home.
The skies darkened earlier and we had a few spots of rain but the sun has returned now. This is the closest we have seen to an actual hill since we left Bulgaria but if today’s journey was all on the flat then tomorrow’s promises to be very different as we head into Transylvania.
