29 November 2022 - Paucourt

Miles driven today = 100

Total Miles to date = 4,500

The weather was vile for the majority of today's journey with iron grey skies and drizzle for the majority of the time.  We left Nuevy-le-Barrois and headed north through the picturesque village of Apremont-sur-Allier, which appeared to have been stuck in a timewarp since the 18th Century, complete with an impressive Château.  Then it was back across the Allier for the final time, just before it reached its confluence with the Loire.

The A77 took us round Nevers and on to Cosne-Cours-Sur-Loire, where it becomes tolled so we stopped for a spot of shopping before continuing on assorted D and N roads along the Loire valley.  At times there were vineyards as far as the eye could see.

We looked at the area around Montargis for potential stopover points and settled on the village of Paucourt, which is completely surrounded by forest.

There is a church and a school but otherwise it's entirely residential.  Not even a village shop.

We are all alone in a car park next to the church which has a motorhome service point.  Overnighting is acceptable and we might get a knock from a local official at some point to demand circa €5 for the priviledge but other reports indicate it's free out of season.  It's certainly very quiet.

The main reason we are here though is the proximity of the forest and luckily just as we arrived the weather took a distinct upturn and the sun came out, so we popped our walking boots on.

The woods seem to be criss-crossed with paths and tracks and the autumn colours of the deciduous leaves in the sunshine were just awesome.

Lisa is never happier than when she is grubbing around in the leaf litter in search of fungi.  We didn't find anything edible but there were a few unusual specimens which were new to her so plenty of photos were taken to identify with her reference books when we get home.

One part of the forest is full of sculptures.

Most of these appeared to have been created in situ from the stumps of trees which had been cleared.

Lisa used to run an annual sculpture trail in the woods in her home town in Yorkshire so this sort of thing is always close to her heart.

A few more pictures....
