31 October 2022 - Andalucian Halloween

Miles driven today = 74

Total Miles to date = 2,874

There is a Lidl just up the road from the marina we have been staying at in Gelves so we popped in for a quick re-stock this morning before hitting the road.  They do 1 litre boxes of wine for €0.89 so we had to try a couple.  We have done a live tasting of the red in the van this afternoon and I can confirm that it is just about drinkable.  However I think going forward we will be sticking to the €2 to €3 a bottle bracket which has been doing us just fine.  We are such snobs!

Our journey South from Seville was alarming.  But only because our CO monitor had somehow flipped itself over and every time we hit certain bumps in the road the "test" button was pressed.  I must get round to finding it a permanant home before that happens again.

We took the dualled E-5 to Jerez de la Frontera, where we picked up the A4 to our destination of El Puerto de Santa Maria.  We pulled in at Camping Playa Las Dunas, which is a €22 ACSI site.  The motorhome bays are fairly full with a mixture of longer term residents and also Spanish families on what I assume to be half term breaks.  A number of people are wandering round the site in Halloween fancy dress so I'm hoping that Trick or Treating isn't a thing here as we have no candy to distribute.

Our main reason for being here is we fancy having a look around Cadiz.  But given the old town is at the end of a very narrow peninsular, getting a large motorhome in there would prove difficult.  So the alternative is to get a ferry across there in the morning so we can have a wander round the town without worrying about finding somewhere to park.

We went for a stroll along the beach after lunch.  It looks nice enough but it was quite overcast and breezy this afternoon so we weren't tempted into having a paddle.

In the distance we can see the road bridge over to Cadiz as well as the dockyards on which the town has prospered since time immemorial.

This area of Andalucia is famous for its production of sherry.  Our walk took us as far as Puerto Sherry, which appears to just be a massive marina, rather than being somewhere they ship barrels of Grandma's favourite tipple from.

There were some huge and very colourful murals surrounding the dinghy park but otherwise not a lot to write home about so we scuttled back along the beach before the tide forced us to take a slightly more inland route.
