7 March 2024 – Garage Clearance

Miles driven today = 0

Total Miles to date = 2,125

Our first full day on Sicily has been a rather leisurely one.  Having paid up for 2 night’s stay here at Marinello di Greco I cracked on with completely emptying and sweeping out the garage and giving everything in there a good airing.  We’ve found that the hinges on one of the garage doors aren’t entirely water tight and so there has been a degree of water ingress in there with all the heavy rain we have been getting.

The leccy bikes finally got their first outing of the trip as we took ourselves off for a quick pedal along the seafront here at Oliveri and also the neighbouring resort of Falcone.

The beaches here are fabulous and almost entirely deserted at this time of year.

The mountains also give a spectacularly scenic backdrop.

This was the view looking back toward Oliveri with the Basilica overlooking the town from the top of the hill.  There are also apparently some Greek ruins up there from the 5th Century BC and we did briefly consider cycling up there to have a look until we realized it’s nearly 300 metres of vertical ascent to get there.

Once you get away from the beach and the nature reserve Oliveri doesn’t really have a great deal to recommend about it, although we did like this roundabout with its colourful ceramic cacti.

The afternoon has basically been spent lazing around the van and skimming stones on the beach.  We’ve made a plan though.  Ideally I would like to arrive in Palermo on Sunday when the traffic is likely to be at its least chaotic and we can then have a look around the City on Monday.  So we have two days to amble our way in that direction and explore a little more of the northern coastline on the way.

The other thing which has made its first appearance of the trip this evening was our Cadac gas barbecue.  We picked up some thinly sliced steaks yesterday so it was a perfect opportunity to cook those up with some assorted mushrooms, garlic potatoes and salad.  Our German neighbours were sniffing the air with some very jealous looks.
