1 April 2025 – A Change In The Weather

Miles driven today = 77

Total Miles to date = 2,697

We had a fair bit of rain hitting the roof of the van last night and when I finally tracked down a member of staff this morning to pay for our stay at Camping Interstation he confirmed what we had already read, that there was plenty more forecast to come over the next couple of days.  Our embryonic plan had been to initially head for some of the hill villages in the northern portion of the Pelion Peninsula but some of those sit at 600+ metres above sea level and as we skirted around Volos we could see that they were almost certainly enveloped in thick cloud and therefore probably not worth the effort, so we had to find a Plan B.

So instead we started to make our way down the West Coast of the Pelion and headed for Camping Sikia, which is a really nicely appointed €25 a night ACSI site overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf and situated in between the neighbouring villages of Kato Gatzea and Kala Nera.  We’ve decided that having had 5 consecutive days on the road we’ll probably stick around tomorrow while the worst of the forecast weather moves through.

Having said that we haven’t had anywhere near as much of the wet stuff today as we had feared.  So this afternoon we had a little walk along the beach to Kato Gatzea.

It’s a very pleasant looking little village with a nice harbour.  A couple of tavernas looked as though they might have been open but there was hardly anybody around so business wasn’t exactly brisk and I got the impression that the only people we spotted sitting in them were probably staff.

Most of the properties along the prom appear to be guesthouses of some description.  Some were very nicely done out.

Whereas, sadly, others seem to be rather unloved and completely derelict.  How about this for a fixer-upper with Sea views.

We even saw a fair amount of sunshine as the afternoon wore on.  Enough to get the camping chairs out anyway.

But the clouds belligerently clung to the higher ground so we are comfortable that our decision to stay on the coast for now was probably the right one.  Assuming it’s not completely thrashing down with rain in the morning we’ll have a wander into Kala Nera.  There’s a bit more going on there by all accounts.
