We don’t have to worry too much about beating the Germans to the Sun loungers round the pool here but we did have to be up with the larks in order to bundle our laundry into the washing machines before our Teutonic campmates monopolized them. There are plenty of empty pitches around us so I rigged up a couple of lines and by 10:30 every single piece of dirty clothing we had in the van was washed and drying gently in the sunshine and the breeze.
I also
busied myself with clearing out the garage and rearranging the contents of the
6 crates we have stacked up in there. It’s
a job I should really have done before we came away but it was just too wet and
cold.
So with everything else removed from the garage it seemed churlish not to get the bikes out as well and take ourselves off for a quick spin. We initially pedaled into the local village of Glyfa and then headed towards Arkoudi, at the most Westerly point on the Peloponnese. As well as the polytunnels I mentioned yesterday, we cycled past citrus groves and plantations of gnarly, ancient olive trees.
There is also plenty of the yellow Oxalis pes-caprae I commented on this time last year in Italy which was making the local honey bee population very happy.
Arkoudi is quite an attractive little town. This is the tiny 17th Century Church of St Nicholas which is the only surviving building of a much larger monastic complex.
We made our way down to the beach with the bikes.
It’s an impressive arc of sand which is no doubt teeming with deckchairs in the Summer months.
But for now Arkoudi is almost completely closed. Not one single beach front taverna open for a much deserved beer!
We pedaled on to Loutra Killinis but that turned out to be nothing but a rather soulless looking all inclusive hotel complex, complete with aqua-park so we made our way on a little further to a deserted beach where we sat in the sand dunes and looked out towards Zakynthos to our left.
And towards Kefalonia to our right.
Back at the van we raided our own fridge for a chilled beverage and felt very smug and self-righteous at having lockers full of clean clothes and bedding, an exceptionally tidy garage and a few miles of exercise in our legs to boot.
